Don’t worry; you don’t actually have to “navigate” anything. In fact, taking the Key West Express is a lot easier, a lot faster, and a lot more fun than driving from Fort Myers to Key West or vice versa (the drive from Fort Myers to Key West takes over five hours!).
The ferry sets sail from Matanzas Harbor on San Carlos Island (just north of Fort Myers Beach) every day (seasonally) at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Key West at noon, while the ferry going the other direction leaves Key West at 6 p.m. and gets into Fort Myers at 9:30 p.m.. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon in Key West and return to Fort Myers for the night, or spend a few days in Key West during your Fort Myers vacation and return any time you want. It’s not just a way to get from place to place though – it’s an adventure.
During your 3.5 hours on the ferry you’ll be on the open water in the Gulf of Mexico, making for some incredible views, especially on the Key West–to–Fort Myers ferry, where you’ll be treated to a gorgeous sunset. Unlike a car or plane, you’ll have the ability to stretch your legs and walk around on deck and enjoy the fresh sea air, as well as visit the snack galley and full bar onboard.
If you want a way to get around town after you disembark, you can bring your bike on the ferry for a fee or just rent a bike when you get there and take the town on two wheels. There are plenty of lodging options near where the ferry makes port, from resorts and hotels to cottages and bed and breakfasts. So if you want to stay overnight or for a few days, it’s easy to make it back to the ferry for your return journey.

Boat was clean, food service was okay-not many options, but tasty. The ride back was bumpy with rougher waters. A number of people got sick, but the crew was very quick to clean.
