We have made the difficult decision to close the Cafe Carpe for the duration of the public health emergency caused by the new corona virus. Slowing down the spread is key, and social distancing is deemed the best preventive measure. We feel it is not socially responsible for us to provide space for people to gather, however cautiously and antiseptically. People can be carriers and asymptomatic for a long time, and in this mobile society, any of us can be unwitting carriers.
Epidemiologists and exponential math are telling us that the infection rates may be low, but then rise quickly, causing a flood of patients to overwhelm the health care system, as in Seattle and Italy. Think of the rush to buy toilet paper causing a shortage, and substitute ICU beds and ventilators.
Public health is a community project. If we flatten the curve by staying apart and lowering the spread of infection, we can hope to avoid the worst scenario.
This crisis will have devastating implications for many, and we trust that community-mindedness will prevail, and that we will all take care of each other. Our community is kind and caring. Let’s keep striving to make the world healthier, safer, and better for all its inhabitants.
The above was written on Sunday March 15.Now the State of Wisconsin has mandated the closing of all restaurants and bars.

Though we are closed and will not be doing business as usual, there will be the occasional live streamed event, so stay tuned to our Facebook page and this website for updates. There was such an event at the end of September.
Now it is November 2020. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Governmental mandates have come and gone, but the coronavirus has staying power and seems to love it in Wisconsin, so we are still closed.
The Carpe is offering some curbside food service on Friday and Saturday nights. Orders must be placed a day in advance. Fridays we have Chicago style stuffed pizza, and Saturdays jambalaya.
Special orders for desserts and baguettes are also possible.

The Cafe Carpe, is a family-friendly cafe and bar, with a listening room, housed in a century-old brick building on the Rock River, with a screened porch overlooking the water. Run by fairly sentient centenarians Bill Camplin and Kitty Welch, the Carpe has been idiosyncratic since 1985. Peruse this site to learn its fascinating history, and to discover what it has to offer, and when, but do not ask why.
