Augmenting is the act of further enhancing weapons and armor past their maximum refinement level. For weapons, augmenting allows you to infuse them with additional properties. Augmenting armor, on the other hand, raises their upgrade limit, allowing you to reach even higher defense values.
Is Slot Increase augmentation good? I would have to say in most cases it’s a NO. The only time I would take this is on a Rarity 6 weapon taking Lifesteal/Slot/Slot to get an extra medium slot. But only on “very specific builds” wherein the medium outweighs 10% affinity and some flat attack. That’s a lot of filters.
You will be able to augment equipment after completing the post-game quests Beyond the Blasting Scales and Thunderous Rumble in the Highlands. Clearing them allows you to take on threat level 2 and 3 investigations that randomly reward streamstones. These materials are quite rare, so you may need to run investigations several times to get the ones you need.
Augments in Iceborne are different to world in that, rather than getting 1, 2 or 3 augments depending on rarity, weapons now have a number of 'slots' to fit augments in, based again on weapon rarity. In addition, each augment is weighed differently, depending on perceived usefulness. Monster Hunter World Iceborne Augment System Guide Back in Monster Hunter World, a weapon could be augmented a set amount of times depending on its rarity. Each augment type was weighted the same. In Iceborne, each augment type has a different “weight” or cost assigned to them and each weapon’s socket number is based on rarity. If you’ve reached the end of the upgrade tree for your master rank weapons in Iceborne, you’ll be able to augment your weapons, choosing specific stats to increase based on the number of slots. In Iceborne, all available augmentations will now have slot costs. The more augment slots your weapons have, the more augmentations you can put into it. Master Rank Weapon Augment Slot Costs Extra Slots Adds 2 More Augment Slots.

Augmenting weapons requires the most farming, as you will need either a warrior’s or hero’s streamstone specific to your weapon. For example, augmenting a rarity 8 great sword requires one hero’s streamstone: great sword.
The number of augments you can infuse your weapon with depends on its rarity. You can have up to three augments on rarity 6 weapons, two on rarity 7, and one on rarity 8.
Weapon augments cannot be removed or replaced once they have been applied. Be sure to choose those that suit your playstyle and skills.
